Solving Toyota Coaster DPF issues

The Toyota Coaster has a diesel particle filter, a technology that has been employed by Toyota on all its diesel vehicles. Its purpose is to limit the amount of carbon the engines releases into the atmosphere. According to Toyota, the Dpf is supposed to last for the estimated useful life of the vehicle if well taken of. However, the system often fails when certain conditions are not maintained.  luckily they are solutions to fix the Toyota Coaster DPF issues but first we will discuss causes and indications.

Driving habits are a major factor in the functionality of the Dpf. Such habits as turning the engine on and off frequently or driving at extremely low speeds for prolonged periods are not favourable for your Coaster. In both instances, the Dpf will not reach optimum temperatures for it to burn soot, resulting in blockage. Bad driving habits are not the only causes for Dpf issues, learn more about the other causes

Signs of Dpf Malfunction

The immediate sign for Dpf malfunction will be the Check Engine Light and Dpf Warning Light illuminating on the dash. The vehicle will intentionally over fuel in a bid to raise exhaust temperature to deal with the blockage. Consequently the engine performance is drastically limited as a measure to prevent further damage.

When you take your vehicle to a technician for diagnosis, some of the following faults will appear:

P2002 – DPF efficiency below threshold (Bank 2)

P242F – DPF restriction – Ash accumulation

P2458 – DPF regeneration duration

P2459 – DPF regeneration frequency

P2463 – DPF Restriction – Soot accumulation

P244A – DPF Pressure too low (Bank 1)

How to fix the dpf problem

There are several solutions available to fix the Toyota Coaster dpf issues and each option  will discussed below.

Regeneration

Forced regeneration may be initiated by service technician via an advanced diagnostic  tool. This is an aggressive strategy to get the Coaster to clean and empty the diesel  particle filter. Exhaust temperatures are raised to extremely high levels to burn the soot  that will be clogging the filter. There are heat and burn hazards  associated with type of  regeneration. Sometimes the regeneration  fails if the clog had surpassed the   manufacturer’s pre-determined level and alternative  solutions have to be sought.

Buy a new DPF

It is of importance to understand why the DPF has blocked to avoid further failures. This option can only work if you are certain that the factors that caused Dpf failure have dealt with adequately. Getting a brand new Dpf does not guarantee that  problem has been solved. Before you click buy  but you may need to click here to make an informed decision. When you have found out what caused the issues, deal with it adequately  to avoid having to replace the filter frequently. Some people have spent thousands of dollars not more than once because they chose to treat the symptoms and not the root cause.

Conversion to Non-DPF

It is advisable to check with laws in your country if it is legal to drive a vehicle that has been converted. Most developed countries have laws concerning emission systems and heavy penalties are to be paid by offenders.  Some parts of the world are still to adopt these standards and they have an option to convert the vehicle to non- Dpf. This solution entails modification of both the software and hardware of the Dpf system. Engine Check light  and Dpf Warning Light will disappear, power will actually increase and fuel consumption will improve. The performance of the Toyota Coaster will be as powerful as the ones that are assembled without the Dpf system.

Upon successful conversion , it will not have any more diesel particulate filter related problems again. The DPF Team converted a Toyota Coaster, learn more about the success story in the video documentary below:

To assist you do the same we also sell Engine control Units that have no dpf system similar to those Toyota coasters assembled in Africa where there is no emission requirements. See our shop below this article to order this ecu from our store

Other Solutions For Toyota Coaster DPF issues

Some owners may be lured to other solutions such as installation of emulators and exhaust additive fluids. In this section we will evaluate their effectiveness to solving the problem.

Emulators are devices installed on the Engine control module to mimic a perfectly working diesel particulate filter. Now, if you read that right and understood then you know why it is a terrible idea to put that device on your vehicle. The upside is its cheap but cannot rely on a device that sends false signals to the control unit of your vehicle. How such devices fail often damages ecus and the engine itself. We have documented a couple of customer cases at our workshop over the years. This is why we do not recommend use of emulators

DPF Fluid Additives cause your exhaust to get hotter than normal in order to cook the soot that blocks the DPF. These additives come with very negative consequences for the sensitive injectors and usually melt away the DPF itself instead of clearing its soot. When a DPF is melt it will block the exhaust which leads to back pressure that will destroy the turbo and/or EGR valves as well. Vehicle owner need to trade carefully when it comes to the solutions to employ to deal with the DPF woes. Below is an image from our customer who had a melted dpf from use of these fluids. This should have also damaged his turbo as the fine filtering pores had become restrictive to flow:

Final Words

The DPF Team is based in Africa but can offer its services wherever you are on the globe. We offer a range of Factory Engine Control Units that have no dpf system. These ecus cover Toyota Coaster and Hino LessieII from 2004-2016. You can purchase these directly from our store. If you have challenges you may contact us on this page
