Landcruiser 79 Series (1GD)

Diesel Tuning – Landcruiser 79 Series (1GD 2.8L)

The Landcruiser 79 Series is famous for its ruggedness. Most people think of the V8 1VD, but the 1GD 2.8‑litre four‑cylinder turbo‑diesel is also available – and it responds beautifully to tuning.

This particular 79 arrived with one important modification already fitted: a full 3″ exhaust system. That means our stock baseline already reflects better flow than a factory‑exhaust car.

We’ll show you what it made stock (with the 3″ exhaust), what our tune unlocked, and where the next bottlenecks lie.

✅ South African models typically have no DPF – but we check each car
✅ A proper diesel tune does not create smoke
✅ Stock turbo and injectors remain – we only change software
✅ The 3″ exhaust helps lower EGTs, especially for towing

The Stock Baseline – With 3″ Exhaust Already Fitted

Before any tuning, this 79 Series was tested on our dyno with its 3″ exhaust system already installed. No other modifications.

Stock (with 3″ exhaust, no tune):
205 horsepower and 481 Newton‑metres of torque.

✅ This is not factory‑stock exhaust performance – the 3″ exhaust already adds a small amount of low‑end response and lower EGTs. But the ECU calibration remains factory.

Our Calibration – Unlocking More from the Same Hardware

We loaded our custom calibration, keeping the factory turbo, factory injectors, and the existing 3″ exhaust. No further hardware changes.

After our tune (same 3″ exhaust + calibration):
246 horsepower and 625 Newton‑metres of torque.

That’s a gain of 41 horsepower and 144 Nm – purely from software, on top of the already‑upgraded exhaust.

✅ No smoke – clean, efficient combustion
✅ Factory reliability preserved
✅ Noticeable improvement in towing and low‑end grunt

Red line: Our tune on same 3″ exhaust – 246hp / 625Nm

What About DPF?

Many imported 79 Series (1GD) come with a DPF. South African models often do not. If your vehicle has a DPF, we strongly recommend removal for long‑term reliability – clogged DPFs cause backpressure, high EGTs, and expensive failures.

✅ Legal in Zimbabwe
✅ We can remove and recalibrate the ECU accordingly
✅ No smoke after removal when tuned correctly

This particular car did not require DPF removal because it is assembled in South African.

Why the 3″ Exhaust Matters (Even Though the Gain Is from Tuning)

You might wonder: if the stock baseline already had a 3″ exhaust, and the tune added 41hp, how much does the exhaust itself contribute?

✅ The exhaust alone (without tuning) adds a small amount of low‑end response and lowers EGTs – but peak power remains nearly the same as a factory exhaust.
✅ The real gains come from tuning – the exhaust simply allows the engine to breathe more freely and safely once the calibration is optimised.
✅ For heavy towing, a 3″ exhaust is highly recommended to keep exhaust gas temperatures in check, protecting the turbo over long hauls.

In other words: the exhaust enables the tune to work safely, but the power increase is from our calibration.

Going Further – Beyond 246hp

For most owners, 246hp / 625Nm is more than enough – especially in a 79 Series. The car pulls harder, tows better, and feels transformed.

But if you want more, the next bottlenecks are:

✅ Turbocharger – the factory 1GD turbo has a flow ceiling
✅ Injectors – they will reach their duty cycle limit
✅ Intercooler – heat soak reduces power on long pulls or hot days
✅ Clutch – the stock clutch may slip with much higher torque

At that stage, a 3″ exhaust (already fitted here) becomes mandatory to manage EGTs.

We have not yet pushed this specific 1GD 79 beyond 246hp, but the platform is capable. Contact us if you want to be the first.

The Bottom Line (For Landcruiser 79 Series 1GD Owners)

SetupPower / TorqueNotes
Stock with factory exhaust~195hp / ~460Nm (estimated)Typical baseline without exhaust
Stock with 3″ exhaust (no tune)205hp / 481NmAs tested – exhaust helps EGTs but not peak power
Our tune + 3″ exhaust246hp / 625Nm+41hp / +144Nm – no smoke, reliable

No stages. Just honest tuning for a workhorse engine.
