Toyota Hilux 1KD (late Model)

The later‑model Toyota Hilux with the 1KD 3.0‑litre turbo‑diesel is a refined evolution of the legendary workhorse. These engines typically make 190–201hp in stock form, depending on the market and emissions equipment.

We’ll show you what a healthy South African example (no DPF) achieved with our tune, then what’s possible with hardware upgrades – and the important caveats for UK‑spec “Invincible” models.

✅ South African models come without DPF – no emission work needed
✅ UK “Invincible” models must have emission systems removed (DPF/AdBlue) – otherwise it’s a death sentence
✅ Proper diesel tuning does not create smoke
✅ Bottlenecks: turbocharger and injectors

The Stock Baseline (South African Model – No DPF)

Our test vehicle was a later‑model South African Hilux with the 1KD. No DPF, no AdBlue from factory.

Stock (factory calibration):
194 horsepower and 401 Newton‑metres of torque.

This is right in the expected 190–201hp range.

Our Calibration – Stock Hardware, Safe Gain

We loaded our custom calibration, keeping the factory turbo, factory injectors, and factory exhaust.

After our tune (stock hardware):
240 horsepower and 612 Newton‑metres of torque.

That’s a gain of 46 horsepower and 211 Nm – a very healthy improvement.

✅ No smoke – clean, efficient combustion
✅ Factory reliability preserved
✅ Transformed drivability for daily driving and towing

A Benchmark Comparison – Tuned 2023 Hilux 2.8

For context, a tuned 2023 Hilux 2.8 (the newer GD‑6 engine) typically makes around 246 horsepower on our dyno with similar stock‑hardware tuning.

Our later‑model 1KD achieved 240hp – just 6 horsepower less than a brand‑new 2.8 Hilux with the same level of tune.

✅ This is an awesome result for an older 3.0 engine
✅ It proves the 1KD is still highly capable and well worth tuning
✅ You get near‑new power without buying a new vehicle

Blue line: Stock (SA model, no DPF) – 194hp / 401Nm
Red line: Our tune – 240hp / 612Nm
Note: A tuned 2023 Hilux 2.8 makes ~246hp – the 1KD is right there.

Important Warning for UK “Invincible” Models

If your Hilux is a UK‑spec model with the “Invincible” badge on the rear, it comes from the factory with DPF and AdBlue systems. These are not optional to keep if you want reliability.

✅ Running a UK Invincible with DPF/AdBlue intact and tuning it will lead to clogged filters, high EGTs, and turbo failure – a death sentence for the engine.
✅ We require DPF and AdBlue removal on these vehicles before tuning (legal in Zimbabwe).
✅ After removal, we recalibrate the ECU, and the results are identical to the SA models – clean, powerful, and reliable.

If you have a UK Invincible, contact us to discuss the removal process.

Going Further – Hardware Upgrades (Turbo + Injectors)

The bottlenecks on the later 1KD are the turbocharger and injectors. Our stock‑hardware tune (240hp) pushes them to a safe limit. But we have pushed one further.

On a customer’s vehicle, we installed:

✅ +30% larger injectors
✅ Hybrid turbocharger (upgraded internals within stock housing)
✅ Custom calibration to match

Result:
261 horsepower and 668 Newton‑metres of torque.

That’s an additional 21hp and 56Nm over our stock‑hardware tune.

Supporting Mods Required for 260hp+

At this power level, two supporting upgrades become essential:

✅ Heavy‑Duty Clutch

Most factory clutches are rated for approximately 650 Nm of torque. At 668 Nm, you are exceeding that limit. The clutch will slip under hard acceleration or towing. A heavy‑duty clutch is mandatory to handle the insane torque.

✅ Bigger Exhaust

A larger exhaust (3″ or 3.5″) is highly recommended to lower exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs). This protects the turbo and pistons, especially during sustained towing or hard driving. The exhaust itself does not add peak power, but it enables reliability at this level.

The Next Bottleneck – Hybrid Turbo vs Garrett Upgrade

In the 261hp / 668Nm build, the hybrid turbo (modified stock unit) became the new bottleneck. It flows well, but it has a ceiling.

✅ A Garrett turbo upgrade (proper aftermarket unit) would allow even more power – potentially 280–300hp with matching injectors and calibration.
✅ The Garrett unit flows more efficiently at higher boost and RPM, shifting the bottleneck further down the system (likely to the intercooler or fuel pump).

We have not yet built a Garrett‑equipped 1KD, but we are ready to develop one with an interested customer.

The Bottom Line (For Later Model Hilux 1KD Owners)

SetupPower / TorqueNotes
Stock (SA model, no DPF)194hp / 401NmFactory baseline
Our tune – stock hardware240hp / 612NmSafe, no smoke, reliable – (only 6hp less than a tuned 2023 Hilux 2.8)
+30% injectors + hybrid turbo261hp / 668NmRequires heavy‑duty clutch + bigger exhaust + 30%injectors + hybrid turbo
Garrett turbo upgrade270–300hp (potential)Requires heavy‑duty clutch + bigger exhaust + 30%injectors + performance turbo

No stages. Just honest tuning with clear pathways and warnings.

Later Hilux 1KD: From 194hp to 240hp (stock hardware) – then 261hp with hybrid turbo and injectors. And yes, a tuned 2023 2.8 makes 246hp – so this 1KD is right there.

Ready for Your Later Hilux 1KD?

If you own a later‑model Hilux with the 1KD 3.0 diesel (South African, UK Invincible, or other) and you want:

✅ A safe, no‑smoke tune – 240hp / 612Nm on stock hardware (awesome result – near a tuned 2023 2.8)
✅ DPF/AdBlue removal for UK Invincible models (legal in Zimbabwe)
✅ A 260hp+ build with hybrid turbo, injectors, clutch, and exhaust
✅ Or to be the first with a Garrett turbo upgrade pushing 300hp

…reach out. We’ll give you a clear, no‑BS recommendation based on your specific vehicle and goals.
